Interviews can feel like a balancing act—impressing the interviewer, aligning with company values, and presenting the best version of yourself, all while staying professional. But it’s easy to forget that interviews are a two-way street. It’s just as important for you to assess whether the role and company are the right fit for you.
The questions you ask during the interview play a crucial role in helping you make informed career decisions.
So, what should you be asking? We spoke to Ella McWilliam, Co-Founder & CEO of creative comms and PR agency Full Fat, to get her take on the must-ask questions for PR & Comms jobseekers. Here’s what she had to say:
1. How do your values influence company culture and practices?
“I love when candidates ask about our values – it’s really impressive. A lot of companies will shout about how they’re a ‘values-driven’ agency, but do they really walk the talk? To really understand if an agency is right for you, make sure to dig deep into how their values show up in the day to day running of the company. They should be able to give your tangible examples of how their values influence the company practices, perks and culture.”
2. What perks and flexible work policies will I have access to?
“You want to make sure that the company is invested in creating a culture that’s enjoyable to work in. If it will help you better understand what it will be like to work at the company, you should absolutely ask about the perks on offer, how certain benefits work and what flexible work opportunities are available. E.g. Is there an option to work abroad? Do you have core hours or flexible start times? Get to know the details.”
3. Can you share some specifics on the clients I will likely be working on?
“Creative agencies love to showcase their hero clients on their website and social media – of course they do! However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you will be the one working on these accounts. It’s a good idea to get insight on the clients you will likely be working on and understand how you will fit in with the current makeup of the team.”
